But, the question now is how to reset a garbage disposal. In other words, the engine has cut power and would need a restart to function properly. This is where the reset button comes in, in order not to damage the disposal motor when it gets clogged, you could ease it with the button. It is basically a button that cuts electrical flow when the component is overworked. You can turn the flywheel from under the disposal as well. Just take the offset wrench that came with the disposal and insert it into the flywheel turning hole in the bottom of the unit.

Turn the wrench clockwise to dislodge the stuck impeller or flywheel. Once freed, turn the power back on at the electrical panel and press the reset button before trying the disposal. Run water and quickly flip the switch on and off to spin the flywheel, dislodge any obstruction, and rinse it down the drain.

This stops the flow of electricity to protect the motor. Turn off the garbage disposal at the wall switch. Unplug the disposal from the wall outlet beneath the sink.

Insert a garbage disposal wrench into the center opening in the bottom of the disposal. Rotate the hex key clockwise and counterclockwise to release the jam. Insert the end of a wooden broom or plunger handle into the garbage disposal through the drain opening in the sink. Use the end of the handle to rotate the grinding plate on the bottom of the disposal to release the jam.

Some disposals may have grinding walls. Push the wooden handle against the grinding wall until it rotates. Rotate the hex key or disposal wrench once again to ensure you have freed the jam from the plate or wall.
