What is flax meal
Is there anything special you need to do in the regular VitaMix canister? I do not yet have a dry blade well and have been curious about how to determine when you use which. Hope that helps! Hi Erika, I just found your website by looking up homemade flax meal. Thanks for your advise :.
Thanks for the helpful video! Hi Meg, You can certainly roast the seeds first, but I would recommend roasting them whole. Hope that helps. Great website— thanks. Is that right? Does that take the speed up higher than the 10 setting on the variable dial? So, I would just suggest you continue blending at the Variable Speed 10 — be sure to use your tamper to help out!
Hi Bob, They are one in the same, but sometimes people call them by different names. I do not have the Vitamix blender and will not be able to get one. I have a Food processor and an older model of the bullet smoothie mixer. Would either one of them be good for making the flaxseeds into meal? I have all my ingredients ready to make some very healthy energy balls and I just noticed that it was not just flaxseeds but it was flaxseed meal. When I googled how to make flaxseeds into meal your video came up.
Please help! Thank you so much. God bless you! Hi Dee! Everything you need to know about flax in an easy-to-find news format. Topics such as seeding, harvesting, managing pests and diseases for example. Flax usage varies throughout many industries, applications, and uses in Canada. Here, you will find a wealth of information regarding flax usage, as well as technical and research data.
The Flax Council of Canada has a great selection of resource material for download. Available are food guides, field manuals, recipe books and general flax information for download. Grinding whole flax seeds breaks the hard outer shell, creating a light and slightly oily powder. Because the seed is already broken, you do not have to worry about chewing like you do with whole seed.
Thus, flax seed meal is easily processed by your body, providing lignans and fibre , plus the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic ALA. You can add flax seed meal easily to many cooked and uncooked foods, and it can act as a thickener or fat substitute in recipes. Because grinding releases the oil, some care must be taken in the storing and handling of meal. Sold to consumers in kilogram or pound packages, flax seed meal is only slightly more expensive than whole seeds.
In seconds, you can prepare flax seed meal from whole seeds, using your own kitchen blender or coffee grinder. Extending or shortening the grinding time creates a finer or coarser meal. You should aim for a free-flowing consistency. You can also purchase packaged ground flax seed, called flax seed meal. Flax seed meal can be used in a variety of ways:. Flax seeds are good sources of many nutrients. Their health benefits are mainly due to their content of omega-3 fats, lignans and fiber.
They are a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid ALA , a mostly plant-based omega-3 fatty acid 2. Animal studies have shown that the ALA in flax seeds prevented cholesterol from being deposited in the blood vessels of the heart, reduced inflammation in the arteries and reduced tumor growth 3 , 4 , 5.
Numerous studies have also linked ALA to a lower risk of stroke 8 , 9 , Furthermore, a recent review of observational data concluded that ALA had heart health benefits comparable to eicosapentaenoic acid EPA and docosahexaenoic acid DHA , two of the more well-known omega-3 fats Flax seeds are a rich source of the omega-3 fatty acid ALA. Plant-based ALA fatty acids are proven to have heart health benefits and are linked to a lower risk of stroke.
Lignans are plant compounds that have antioxidant and estrogen properties, both of which can help lower the risk of cancer and improve health Interestingly, flax seeds contain up to times more lignans than other plant foods 5. Observational studies show that those who eat flax seeds have a lower risk of breast cancer, particularly postmenopausal women In a small study including 15 men, those given 30 grams of flax seeds a day while following a low-fat diet showed reduced levels of a prostate cancer marker, suggesting a lower risk of prostate cancer Flax seeds also appeared to have the potential to prevent colon and skin cancers in laboratory and animal studies.
Yet, more research is needed to confirm this Nevertheless, the evidence thus far points to flax seeds being a potentially valuable food in the fight against various cancers. Flax seeds contain a group of nutrients called lignans, which have powerful antioxidant and estrogen properties. They may help in preventing breast and prostate cancer, as well as other types of cancer. This fiber duo gets fermented by the bacteria in the large bowel, bulks up stools and results in more regular bowel movements.
On one hand, soluble fiber increases the consistency of the contents of your intestine and slows down your digestion rate. This has been shown to help regulate blood sugar and lower cholesterol On the other hand, insoluble fiber allows more water to bind to the stools, increases their bulk and results in softer stools.
This is useful for preventing constipation and for those who have irritable bowel syndrome or diverticular disease 5. With so much fiber packed in each tiny seed, adding flax seeds to your diet promotes regular bowel movements and can improve your digestive health. These effects appear to be due to the fiber in flax seeds, as it binds to bile salts and is then excreted by the body.
